What to do after an auto accident

  1. Immediately check on all passengers, other vehicles and pedestrians for injuries. Call 911 and report any injuries and start a public safety response.
  2. Move your vehicle to a safe spot away from traffic, if possible. 
  3. Regardless of how it happened, do not admit fault. 
  4. Do not discuss the accident with anyone except the police. 
  5. Get a copy of the accident report from the police, or find out from the officer how to obtain a copy of the report.
  6. Take notes of the accident details, including the place, time of day, description of damages to your vehicle, other vehicles and property involved. Use your smartphone to take pictures of any damage. 
  7. Get the following information from the other driver(s) involved in the accident:
    1. Name
    2. Address
    3. Phone number
    4. Drivers license number
    5. License plate, state and number
    6. VIN of vehicle
    7. It is easier to take pictures of the VIN and other information.
  8. Contact Willard Insurance or your insurance carrier as soon as possible with all of the above information as well as your own information.
